It has been a difficult time for Isaac Schmidt since he left St. Gallen to join Leeds United going from scoring in European football to warming the Elland Road substitutes’ bench.
The night before he joined Leeds, Schmidt played for St. Gallen in the Conference League and was given a hero’s exit after he netted in a qualifier against Turkish side Trabzonspor, St. Gallen winning on penalties.
But since his deadline-day move to Leeds which set The Whites back a fee of £4.6m, Schmidt has been afforded just two starts which have come in The FA Cup against Harrogate Town and then Millwall.
Seven substitute outings have come Schmidt’s way with Daniel Farke questioning Schmidt’s application in training. The full-back has had to cope with more intensity and that has seen him pick up a few injuries.

The Leeds player has been afforded a shock call-up by Switzerland, with Murat Yakin including a few new faces in order to freshen up his squad ahead of games against Northern Ireland and Luxembourg.
Speaking to Blick while on international duty with Switzerland, Schmidt says that it has taken him time to adapt to the bigger intensity in training at Leeds compared to his time with St. Gallen during 2024-25.
“The training sessions at Leeds are of a completely different quality than they were in St. Gallen,” the Leeds defender said when asked about the differences between his current club and the one he left.
“Even though I’m not playing, I’ve gotten used to the fast pace. If I had joined the national team eight months ago, I might not have been able to keep up with the intensity here in training,” he added.

Are we going to see Isaac Schmidt play for Leeds again this term?
A total of 16 players on the Leeds books are on National Team duty, including Rasmus Kristensen even if Leeds did not mention his name on their site. For those at Leeds and not on loan, Farke will be worried.
He won’t want any fatigue or injuries when they come back to Elland Road ahead of a clash on March 29 against Swansea. But for Schmidt, it is different – Farke will be hoping Schmidt gets to win his first caps.
Switzerland’s two fixtures during March break:
| Date | Competition | Opposition | Venue | Kick-off time |
| Friday March 21 | Friendly | Northern Ireland | Windsor Park | 7.45PM |
| Tuesday March 25 | Friendly | Luxembourg | AFG Arena | 7.45PM |
To get some game time and come back a player with a renewed confidence and some match sharpness. It might just give him a chance of getting a game off the bench in the final eight matches of the season.
